Diversity, Equality and Inclusion at AGSB

A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is one of the cornerstones of Altrincham Grammar School for Boys (AGSB). At AGSB, the work of anti-racism, and our larger goals around diversity, equality and inclusion, are the responsibility of every member of the community. As a multi-ethnic school, the benefits of our work in this area bring with it a brighter future for each individual, a thriving community, and an enriched society.

We want all our pupils to feel that they are an important part of our School community and we work hard to ensure that everyone feels safe and supported while they are with us, regardless of their ethnicity, religious beliefs, economic background, gender, sexuality or ability. Our commitment to equality of experience is also woven into our School Values which underpin every aspect of AGSB life: Love of Learning; Respect; Responsibility; Resilience.

We achieve this through:

Regular Training
Staff, student and governor training about diversity and inclusion and how to tackle them.  From “banter” to overtly discriminatory things we may hear and see on social media, all within our community will be aware of how to deal sensibly with any situations that may occur.

Recognising and Celebrating Diversity
We aim to include parents and students in celebrating the diverse nature of our student body.  We have a cultural calendar, which brings into school the celebrations from home, regular events such as Utsav 2021, LGBTQ+_History Month and Black History Month.

Inclusive Teaching and Learning
We have regular reviews and audits of our subjects to ensure that our topics and resources reflect our student body and society as a whole.  We empower staff to look objectively at their subjects and to challenge any stereotypes within.  We also encourage first-hand experience from staff and students to be used within lessons where appropriate.

A clear Anti-racism Policy
We have gone beyond our equalities policy to really highlight our journey to becoming an anti-racist school.  We have a clear and consistent approach to racist behaviours so that all members of our school community can feel safe and welcome at AGSB.  We also empower students and staff to feel confident when talking about issues of diversity and inclusion.

Equal Opportunities
AGSB seeks to promote equality of opportunity, provision, access, and treatment for all members of our community. We do not seek to tolerate difference but to celebrate it through challenging all forms of prejudice, encouraging active commitment to equality, and promoting critical thinking.

As a school, we understand that our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is an ongoing journey. We are still listening, learning, and improving all the time and remain committed to this as a whole school community.
