[characters]

Meet Marlborough Road’s wacky characters and find out a little about the trained artistes playing them.

[the teachers]

Mr. Whitehurst - Adopting a more ‘traditional’ approach to teaching, Mr. Whitehurst isn’t known in the school for his kind and loving nature. Taking great dislike to both pupils and teachers of the school, Whitehurst is the archetypal 1950’s teacher.

Mr. Tennpins - An unusual creation conceived by the writer; Mr. Tennpins is a character like no other. An avid fan of both Star Trek and computers, Mr. Tennpins is no ordinary ICT teacher.

Miss Bretts - The new girl on the block, Miss Bretts is immediately embraced into the bosom of Marlborough Road. Kind-hearted and really…nice, both students and teachers adore her.

Mr. Rhythbourne - Marlborough Road ’s hapless headmaster tries to maintain order in the school, when he’s not playing golf that is. With a slight fear of confrontation with teachers, he relies heavily on assistant Jean.

Mr. Jones - The schools Physical Education teacher, utilizing his wit and articulacy in order to impress the pupils and more importantly win over Miss Bretts.

[the pupils]

James Kirby - Prompt, punctual, on time and hard working. James Kirby epitomizes academic excellence and dedication to his school. Sitting on both the school council and the committee de arts. Although can someone truly be that perfect?

RAYDON (Raymond Donovan) - Like the radioactive gas, Raydon pollutes the happy atmosphere of Marlborough Road with his ‘revolutionary politics’, although his grasp of revolutionary politics is somewhat questionable.

Daniel Mapel - Head boy of Marlborough Road Grammar School, Daniel Mapel’s authority in the school amongst both pupils and teachers is evident. Choosing to adopt honest arrogance, rather than hypocritical humility.

[the non-teaching school staff]

Jean - The ‘don’ of the dinnerladies, Jean’s unique in both personality and cuisine. Winner of NONTSSA Dinnelady of the North 1998, her catering and sanitation abilities are sought after by many a school.

Barbara - Well, Bab’s for short, new to the catering and sanitation industry, Bab’s is quick to learn the trade secrets behind her new profession. It won’t be long before she’s challenging Jean for her position.

Liz - Well informed (by Take a Break Magazine), with St. Johns Ambulance training, Liz is the icing on the metaphorical cake of the trio of dinnerladies. She may appear happy and jolly, but is she hiding a deep, dark secret?

Joan - Personal assistant to the headmaster, Joan is the true brains behind the Marlborough Road Grammar School operation. Welcoming to all visitors, always ready to offer tea, coffee or a Turkish Delight, 98% fat free Options hot chocolate drink.

[the actors]

Ben Lewis - A classically trained operatic virtuoso, Ben has ‘roughed it’ in agreeing to play the part of Mr. Whitehurst. Used to treading the boards with the RSC (Ringway Singing Club), Ben’s dulcet tones bring a great energy & sophistication to the program.

J. Timmins - Sheer luck and co-incidence in the similarity of the names of J. Timmins, the acto,r & Mr. Tennpins the character. This is not Mr. Timmins' first acting role, but it is hard to believe it isn't, as he adopts a technique known to many thespians as method acting, in order to play his character to its full potential.

T. Harvey - Achieving critical acclaim for her involvement in the production of ‘Guys and Dolls’ & ‘The Three R’s’, Mrs. Harvey’s contribution is essential to the success of Marlborough Road.

Joe Battman - It has been said that anything Joe Battman touches turns to gold. From sport, to writing, the vocal talents of Joe Battman return with a vengeance in this radio soap opera.

Archibald Coulter - Affectionately known to cast members as ‘Archie’, the similarity between ‘the character’ and the actor is staggering, begging the question which came first, the Archie or the Jones?

Yousef Gargani - The great talents of Yousef are put to the test, as he takes on a variety of roles and dialects, demonstrating his true abilities Not only contributing his vocal talents, but also lending a hand in the writing process, Yousef has recently been nominated by the academy for a NONTSSA (see ep. 1).

Sean O’Reilly - So dedicated as an actor, Sean chooses to play not one, but two roles in this fine radio program: a disruptive, slightly annoying revolutionary known as RAYDON. His unique vocal style brings a great artistic depth to the character or Babs (the dinnerlady).

David Macfaden - This young, enterprising individual brings the celebrity status to the soap opera, as well as adopting a role of factual consultant. As head boy of Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, David is an important name in Cheshire’s social circuit, providing the writers with advice on the true stresses and strains of being head boy.

Yousef Gargani - (See James Kirby)

Sean O’Reilly - (See RAYDON)

Tom Lyons - One might refer to Tom as an enthusiastic amateur, contributing the vocals for the character of Liz. A character, with whom he shares a number of characteristics; both are quiet, contented and avid fans of ‘Take a Break’ Magazine

The producer would also like to thank Mr. J Timmins and Mrs. S Williams for their help in the creation of the program’s premise.

G Murray - G Murray is revered by all her fellow thespians as a meganought in the entertainment world, at times lending a hand in teaching mathematics
