Parent Governors
Our Parent Governors would be delighted to speak to you if you have any questions or issues that you might like to raise. Their details are as follows:
Mr Christopher Barrat, parent of a pupil in Year 13 and Chairman of Governors.
Email christopher@greystone.co.uk
I have been a parent governor and the Chairman of Governors for the last 8 years. With one son successfully through the School and my second son in Year 13, I am keen to continue to build the School for the future. During my time as Chair we have attracted over £4.5 million into the School for investment, completing a fantastic 6th Form centre, new classroom blocks and a major sports investment in the building of The Grammar. I have found an excellent working relationship with the Headmaster and senior staff and would like to continue to support them over coming years. I want to keep the momentum on all three areas of academic, sporting and arts achievement, and at the same time maintain the ethos of the relationship between staff and pupils, which underpins the performance and culture of the School, as a leading school of its type in the country.
Mrs Denise Haddad, parent of a pupil in Year 7 and on the Admissions Committee.

I am keen to contribute to the School and help ensure its continuing success and high educational standards.Education is not only about helping children achieve their maximum academic potential but is also about helping them develop as rounded individuals so that they have the best opportunity to live a fulfilling life. As such sport, music, extracurriclar activites and the pastoral care within a school are crucial.
There are many changes taking place in the education system, nationally and locally, making it particularly important that parents have strong and effective representation on governing bodies. For the last four years I have been a parent governor at Altrincham Girls Grammar School. In this position I am chair of the Curriculum and Pastoral Care Committee and a member of the Admissions Committee. For the last 2 years I have also been a parent representative for the Education Overview and Scrutiny Sub-Committee at Trafford. This involves representing the views of parents and helping to ensure that the schools in Trafford offer all round excellence.
I have three children, two teenage daughters, and a son in Year 7. This means I have experience of the educational issues and pressures facing children, and their parents, throughout their school education.
My first degree was a BSc in Community Health Education and for many years I worked in the National Health Service, specialising as a nurse practitioner in occupational health and in teaching post-qualification nurses. My clinical work often involved dealing with complex situations and handling sensitive and confidential matters. I recently completed a post-graduate diploma in law and believe that my work experience, personal qualities and previous experience as a governor allow me to effectively represent the views of parents on the governing body.
Mr Darren Jones, parent of a pupil in Year 9, on the Estates/Development Committee.

I am a Chartered Surveyor who was educated at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys. My son is in Year 9. I support the ethos, teaching, pastoral care, the friendliness and the fact that the individual needs of each child, whatever their interest, is considered and accommodated at AGSB.
For the first 17 years of my career I was a Director of a large property company, before establishing my own property development business. Presently I am an Assistant Executive Director at Oldham Council overseeing Strategic Projects, Assets and Economic Development. This role includes the delivery of Oldham Council's "Building Schools for the Future" and School Academies Programme, its major regeneration projects and a part in the Council's transformation programme. My career has provided me with an in-depth knowledge of both commercial and public sectors and how they can beneficially work together. In addition to specific property experience I have a range of business and management skills which would be helpful in assisting with budgetary allocation and control, business plans and general Human Resources issues.
I have previous rewarding experience as a parent governor of an OFSTED outstanding Trafford MBC primary school where I was Chair of the Buildings sub-committee and was involved in a number of campaigns to improve the facilities and health and well being of the children. I understand that the governing body role is to provide strategic management to a school, act as a critical friend and ensure that the school is accountable for its actions.
I think that parent governors should be accessible to provide a two-way channel of communication, feeding views of parents as a whole into governing body meetings, and then reporting back to parents on decisions reached without breaking the confidentiality of the meetings.
I passionately believe in achievement and giving back to the school community. I consider that I have the necessary enthusiasm, motivation, commitment and local knowledge that will be useful to the development of the school and to the Headteacher and his staff in maintaining the high standard and ethics of the school now and in the future.
Mrs Sharon Kupusarevic, parent of a pupil in Year 8, on the Curriculum & Welfare Committee.

I am married, live in Hale Barns and have two children, including a son in Year 8. My interests include tennis, cooking and assisting with the organisation and administration of the Bowdon Under-13s cricket team. Hence, on a Friday evening I am usually to be found stood in a field, shouting encouragement from the sidelines (often in the rain!)
I am a firm believer in 'the community', and have a strong desire to serve within it. I have first-hand experience of working in an official role as a parent-school partner. I understand how the two can work together closely to achieve long term objectives. During my three years as Chair of a local primary school PTA, we raised over £90,000 for our school. I also learned how to collate and represent parents' views fairly, whilst balancing these with the challenges and objectives that the school faces. As a visible leader, I earned wide and positive recognition and believe my expertise can be used to help to continue to raise the quality of education and overall experience for the boys at AGSB.
My career has centred around sales and marketing, and in 2005 I joined Citizens Advice, as a management consultant, advising individual bureaux how to run their organisation. My work has enabled me to develop a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a volunteer trustee/governor, and how they must act as a critical friend – supporting and challenging effectively, in order to contribute to an organisation's overall strategic development.
As well as my role within Citizens Advice, I also run my own consultancy, focusing on change management and organisational development. Throughout my career I have developed a wide range of skills, particularly in project and financial management, human resources and communications. I also have working knowledge of relevant and current legislation in these areas.
Prof Charles Streuli, parent of pupils in Year 8 and Year 13 and on the Estates/Development Committee and Finance Committee.

I have two sons at AGSB and have served two terms as Parent Governor. In my professional life I am Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Manchester and Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell-Matrix Research.
The main contributions during my tenure as Governor have been to: (a) establish strong links with the University of Manchester's Faculty of Life Sciences, providing research experience for Year 12 Biology students; (b) help secure Government funding for The Grammar; (c) strive to improve the quality and nutritional value of food served in the canteen; (d) serve on the Finance and Estates/Development Committees; (e) chair a Governors' sub-committee to develop plans for a new Science block and provide governance for this.
Mrs Judith Nicol, parent of a pupil in Year 11, Chair of the Admissions Committee and on the Curriculum & Welfare Committee; and Personnel Committee.

I have been a parent governor at AGSB for over 4 years. My 3 boys have all been educated in the school and I still have one son in Year 11. I am currently the Chair of the Admissions Committee.
I have sat on several Boards in the commercial and voluntary sectors and am still Chair of a small arts organisation. I think my main contribution as a governor has been to use this experience to help guide discussions and decision making.
The school has grown significantly and its places have become more sought after, since I first had contact with it as a parent in 2003. However its focus not only on the academic success of the boys, but also on creating a nurturing environment has remained unchanged. It is the combination of these two things that as a Governor I feel are so important and need to continue to be reflected in running the school. I am keen to see the school continue to reach out to the most able children in Trafford and beyond, from the widest range of feeder schools.
I have my own business specialising in Leadership Development, working in both the private and public sectors. I am passionate about the importance of continuous learning for adults and I believe this enthusiasm for personal development should start with young people in schools. I believe AGSB does have a culture of encouraging all the boys to expand their horizons in many aspects of the academic and non academic curricula, and as a Governor I am keen to see this continue. I have a degree in Modern Languages from Cambridge University.
