Unit One – The Nature of God

(a) Describe the reasons religious people might give for believing in God. (40)
(b) How important are miracles to believers of the religion(s) you have studied? (35)
(c) ‘The sacred writings of religion are out of date. People can’t be expected to believe what they read in them today.’ Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer and show that you have considered other points of view. (25)

Prepare for this assignment by the work you do in lessons and homeworks.
To answer these questions, refer to the relevant pages in your textbooks, class notes as well as other media you have used (such as video, the Internet, Library books etc.).

In particular, look at:
Thinking through Religion Wright, Mercier, Bromley, Wordern, Oxford 2000 pp 84 – 90
Discovery Mayled, Ahluwalia, Nelson Thornes Ltd 2002 pp 9 - 26
Thinking about God, Harrison, Kippax, Collins 1996 pp 13 – 18

In addition, for part (a) you might look at creation stories from the religion that you are studying. For example, the Genesis creation stories in Genesis I and II for Judaism and Christianity.

For part (b) choose some miracle stories, either from scriptures or modern miracles (from videos watched in lessons).

In part (c) you should argue from both points of view before coming to a conclusion in order to achieve the top level available.

Remember the date that this assignment is due in – this is your responsibility. Don’t leave the work for this until the last minute – prepare for it over the course of the unit of study.
