Unit four – death and the afterlife

(a) Describe what believers of the religion you have studied think happens to people after death. (40)

(b) Describe what happens at a funeral service in the religion you have studied. How might it comfort a friend of the deceased who is a believer. (35)

(c) ‘This life is all that matters. We can’t worry about what happens next.’ Do you agree? Give reasons to support your answer and show that you have considered other points of view. (25)

Prepare for this assignment by the work you do in lessons and homeworks.

To answer these questions, refer to the relevant pages in your textbooks, class notes as well as other media you have used (such as video, the Internet, Library books etc.).

In particular, look at:

Thinking through Religion Wright, Mercier, Bromley, Wordern, Oxford 2000

pp 100 - 111

Discovery Mayled, Ahluwalia, Nelson Thornas Ltd 2002 pp 65 - 82

For part (b) you will need to refer to a religious service (perhaps by looking at a religious service book)

In part (c) you should argue from both points of view before coming to a conclusion in order to achieve the top level available.

Remember the date that this assignment is due in – this is your responsibility. Don’t leave the work for this until the last minute – prepare for it over the course of the unit of study.
