Physical Education

We aim to give information on curricular, extra-curricular and community sport.

These are exciting times for the department and the school as a whole with the new Astroturf available for lessons, practices and fixtures, as well as our brand new Sports Centre. These increased facilities enhance the opportunity and provision for boys at the school and members of the local community.

Please find information on our evolving curriculum amongst our key stage pages along with information on our PE uniform and suppliers. For extra curricular news please see the pages dedicated to each individual sport or activity; which hold pictures, fixtures and match reports.

The boys study a range of different activities during their time at AGSB. The departments' aims are to offer a broad and balanced curriculum in both team and individual disciplines.

The new facilities have increased the range of provision already in core lessons, targeting the schools traditional areas of games strengths such as rugby, football, hockey and cricket, whilst also affording boys in all years access to new experiences such as basketball, volleyball, rounders and orienteering as well as individualistic activities such as badminton, table tennis, tennis, athletics and fitness, all coupled with elements of health and fitness, tactics and strategy, skills and improvement.

Lessons are an hour long and in Years Seven to Eleven boys have four lessons of PE per fortnight. We also offer GCSE and A Level PE, using the OCR board, please see our examination section for more information regarding these areas.

On a Wednesday afternoon, boys in Years Twelve and Thirteen have a range of different enrichment opportunities from which to choose; rugby, football, hockey, squash, or use of the sports centre where they can play badminton, use the fitness suite or play table tennis. During this time pupils also have the opportunity to study an extra language, become an AGSB volunteer or undertake any other worthwhile, valuable activity, such as golf or music.

GCSE PE

Pupils have the opportunity to study GCSE PE in Years Ten and Eleven. The school follows the OCR Games Syllabus which requires pupils to work both practically and theoretically in order to complete their course.

Pupils are assessed in a range of different practical disciplines including football, basketball, volleyball, badminton and softball, with their best four scores counting towards 60% of their final grade. Pupils also have to complete a piece of coursework which adds to the practical element.

Pupils study various aspects of health, fitness, anatomy and physiology theoretically over their two years on the course which is then assessed during a two hour examination at the end of the subject which makes up the remaining 40% of the marks.

GCSE PE is a popular option with boys doing well and achieving high grades, many choose to continue studying PE into the Sixth Form following the OCR as and A2 level courses that the department also offers.

AS/A2

Boys study two units at AS level and two at A2. As with GCSE PE there are practical and theoretical elements to the course, with boys having to prove their physical performance in two activity areas, one of which is their practical performance and the other is the completion of the Community Sports Leaders Award. Boys also study Anatomy and Physiology, Movement Skills and Socio-cultural Studies in PE for their AS level award.

For the A2 level course, the marks are carried forward from AS level and the boys also investigate Historical Aspects, Physiology and Sports Psychology coupled with the Improvement of Effective Performance as a practical element. These four units then comprise the final A2 grade.
