ICT and Computing

The Department

ICT and Computing are both expanding subjects in the school. This is due to the innovative curriculum and the growing reputation of the subjects. There is no escaping ICT in the 21st Century world. ICT is now a core skill and requirement in many aspects of life, at home and at work. Today's youth need ICT skills and knowledge to ensure they can successfully participate in our modern culture.

We aim to thoroughly prepare our students by providing the best education and the best facilities. We encourage them to become skilled, independent and appropriate users of ICT, by teaching a thorough, varied and innovative curriculum.

Each successive year has seen an increase in numbers taking ICT and Computing at GCSE and AS/A2, with both now being very popular subject choices. Results at all levels have also seen a year on year rise and an increasing number of our school leavers go on to take ICT or Computing based degrees.

The department also runs a number of afterschool clubs involving multimedia, Lego Mind Storms, animation and programming.

The Facilities

The Department operates 5 ICT suites, equipped with PCs, interactive whiteboards, projectors, printers and scanners, all based around a Windows 2003 network. A wide range of software is available. Apple Mac facilities have also now been introduced into Music and Art. A wireless network provides staff with access to the Internet and ICT resources anywhere in the School.

Information about the Courses studied

At KS3 the subject is compulsory, with all pupils receiving two one hour long lessons a fortnight.

We offer GCSE, AS and A2 in both ICT and Computing. The exam board we are currently using are OCR. For each qualification there is both a coursework and an exam element. Coursework projects are focused around building systems, multimedia, gaming and programming. The exams are focussed around the impact of ICT and Computing on society, along with the other elements such as software functions, software development, programming techniques, to name a few.
