Classics At AGSB

Classics is the studey of ancient Greece and Rome and encompasses aspects of history, art, architecture, language, literature, philosophy, mythology and science.

In year 7 the Classics studies course looks at Minoan Crete and legends associated with that island, the Trojan Wars; Homers poems; Athens and Sparta and Alexander the Great.
Latin is available as an option in year 8. We use the Cambridge latin course.

Those who go on to take GCSE will study latin poets and prose authors in the original language and study a topic such as Roman britania or the Roman army.

At AS and A2 level works of literature are studied in greater depth and language skills furthur developed. Typical authors studied include Vergil, Horace, Livy, Sallust, Juvenal, Ovid and Tacitus. Some students go on to study classics at university.

Greek is also offered as an extra-curricular option on Monday, TUesday, Thursday and Friday lunchtimes.
