What happens in the Art & Design Department:
All students take art from year 7. They are taught different styles and topics as they progress through the years. Students discover how to look at art in its many forms and apply what they learn to create art work of their own.
AIMS OF THE DEPARTMENT:
To develop in all pupils a measure of visual perception, and to see this development as being a vital adjunct to their development in literacy and numeracy. To enable pupils to observe, select, interpret and record their responses to experiences.
To enable pupils to understands the visual aspects of their environments, to be able to select and use suitable sources of visual reference material from this and to respond in a creative way.
To enable pupils to communicate through visual means, using the formal elements of art confidently.
To develop pupils' levels of technical competence and practical skills, and an understanding of artistic processes, so that they may select and use appropriate media and techniques in an effective and sensitive manner.
To give pupils an understanding of the visual arts in a historical, contemporary, cultural and social context. To enable them to make informed appraisals of their own work and that of others.
To enable all pupils to realize their full potential in the subject, both in terms of personal fulfillment and results in public examinations.
