Chemistry Department

The Chemistry Department

The chemistry department consists of 5 teachers and one lab technician.  Chemistry is taught in one of three dedicated labs.
In Y9 we follow a newly developed scheme of work until the February half term.  After half term we begin work on the GCSE syllabus.

All boys now study chemistry as a separate GCSE.  The department follows the AQA syllabus at GCSE and A level.  Chemistry

The chemistry department has undergone a prolonged period of expansion over recent years up to the point where we now have one of the largest sixth form chemistry entries in the North West.  In this year we have over 160 students in the sixth form (5 groups in Y12 and 4 groups in Y13-the average group size is 18 pupils).

Many of the students following chemistry in the sixth form target a place on a medical degree course although we have had an increasing number of students going into chemistry related degree courses in recent years.

The Chemistry Department Aims

Bullet As a department we aim to develop the student's interest in, and enthusiasm for chemistry.  We strive to develop a critical approach to scientific evidence and methods.  Through this, students acquire knowledge and understanding of how science works and the role of chemistry's essential role in society.
Bullet Where possible, students are given the opportunity to carry out practical work and to take some responsibility health and safety implications of their work.
Bullet At other times we encourage our students to undertake some independent learning, especially at A-level.
Bullet The success of our teaching can be gauged by the large take up of the subject at A-level.
