Job Description: To study microorganisms, plants and animals living in water environments: how they develop, how they adapt to their environment, and how they interact with their environment and with other organisms.
"Marine biologist" – To study organisms living in saltwater environments.
"Limnology" – To study organisms living in freshwater environments.
Qualifications: Good A levels Biology, Maths and one other science subject, a Biology degree (not necessarily Marin Biology, as it’s possible to specialize later by taking a Masters or PhD). Competency in maths and chemistry is essential, as is the ability to use computers. A foreign language helps too, since marine biologists often work all over the world.
Salary – Up to L20,000 for most. Higher pay levels available, but unlikely to be obtained until age 40-50.
Job Description: To maintain and service specialized and complex equipment that is used for the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Many specialize in either nuclear medicine or in medical engineering.
Qualifications: No minimum entry requirements, but trainees should have a degree in engineering, or an A-level or BTEC in electronics.
Salary: Around L30,000 once qualified.
Job Description: To protect and manage bio diversity in the environment, and to help restore healthy ecosystems.
Qualifications: A Science degree, plus often a postgraduate qualification.
Salary: Around L27,000.
Job Description: To collaborate with police departments to discover and process evidence that can be used to solve crimes, using scientific methods.
Qualifications: Good academic record, with at least one Science A-level, a good degree in Chemistry or Biology, plus postgraduate qualification in Forensic Science.
Salary: L15,000 to L40,000
Job Description: Discovering how toxic substances produce their effects upon the organism(s) to which they are toxic.
Qualifications: Degree in Biology/Chemistry. PhD is also recommended in order to reach the higher pay levels.
Salary: Varies depending on the type of degree held, and upon the number of years of experience. Around L20,000-L100,000.
Job Description: To solve environmental problems (e.g. water and air pollution, waste disposal, public health) using knowledge of Biology and Chemistry.
Qualifications: A degree in Engineering/Engineering Technology.
Salary: Around L30,000.
Job Description: to conserve and manage wildlife populations and their habitats, investigating how land use affects wildlife habitats, to implement laws to protect wildlife.
Qualifications: degree in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Management, or Natural Resources Management, with a PhD often necessary.
Salary: L17,000 minimum
Job Description: to provide a service to the public in terms of diagnosing and treating diseases, illnesses and infections, and to provide social support to their patients.
Qualifications: good A-levels including Chemistry and one other Science (typically AAB), evidence of voluntary work, degree in Medicine.
Salary: L21,000 minimum.
Job Description: to diagnose and treat the range of problems which affect the mouth and teeth.
Qualifications: academic requirements for entry to Dental courses are high. The courses lead to a degree.
Salary: L26,500 minimum.
Job Description: This is the study of micro-organisms. These are single-celled organisms or organisms with cells that show little or no differentiation. This usually spans bacteria, yeasts and viruses. Microbiologists study a number a different aspects, growth conditions, detection methods and sources of micro-organisms.
Some focus on bacteria and how they attack the body, some learn about new diseases and some focus on viruses and how they damage the body.
Qualification: A Microbiology / Biology degree, usually with some postgraduate experience.
Job Description: This is the area of biology that deals with the formation, breakdown, and structure of a macromolecules such as DNA. Molecular biologists combine a number of biology fields in their day-to-day experiments. The main skills that a molecular biologist must have are mathematical ability, problem solving and analytical skills.
Qualifications: There are a number of different jobs available at different levels, so it is possible to get a job in molecular biology with a BSc, a MSc or a Ph.D.
Job Description: This is the clinical basis for medical practice as it is the study of the nature of diseases, their progression and their causes. All the work that is done is highly important in medical diagnosis, patient management and research. There are three main areas of pathology – anatomical, clinical and experimental. The average salary for a pathologist is about L25,000 with specialists in a particular area of pathology earning slightly more.
Qualifications: For some jobs in pathology no educational qualifications are needed as on the job training is given but for higher ranked jobs usually a degree in biomedical Science or other related degree is required, with industrial experience.

Job Description: Food science and technology is the Worlds largest economic activity in the world. The job of a food scientist is to examine the chemistry and biology of foods from raw materials right through to the final product. A food technologist has the job to use food science and other methods to turn raw materials into the finished product for customers to consume. As raw materials are gathered from around the world, food technologists must be flexible and willing to travel.
Qualifications: Usually requires a degree in either food technology, biology or chemistry.

Job Description: Careers in the brewing industry don’t involve too many free samples but a lot of beer tasting has to be done on the job! A brewers job combines areas of biochemistry and microbiology, as well as areas of chemical engineering. Half of a brewers time is spent in a lab carrying out tests on the quality of the beer, whilst the other half is spent in the brew house, trying to improve manufacturing processes.
Qualifications: To get into the field, brewing and distillery degrees are available but it is also possible to come from any science background as it is possible to take professional exams whilst you train.

Job Description: This is the study of cells and materials to create a number of pharmaceutical, diagnostic, agricultural and environmental products to benefit society. The main way this is done is by manipulating genes of plants and animals in a way that benefits people and society.
Qualifications: usually requires a degree in Bio-Technology or Biology.

Job Description: Medical researchers work to research and developmental areas of medicine. to get a career in medical research it is necessary to have a Ph.D., with the average wage being about L30-35,000 a year.
