Year 9 badminton team qualify for next round!

Well done to the year 9 badminton team!

Altrincham Grammar School for Boys proudly sent a group of 5 year 9 students to participate in the Greater Manchester finals at Castle Leisure Centre in Bury on Tuesday 19 th January. The format meant that we played 3 matches against each school. Our first and second seeds played singles matches and the third and fourth seeds played together in a doubles match.

In the group stages we had to play Matthew Moss High School and Failsworth School, and we soon became aware of the high standard of badminton that was to be on show that day. This, however, did not deter them as they rose to the challenge and demonstrated some superb skill and technique, which resulted in the team winning the group stages and qualifying for the semi-finals. Special mention needs to be made of Paritosh who performed exceptionally well and won two very hard fought matches, one singles and one doubles. The best match in the group stages was, without a doubt, Joe Urwin's singles match against Matthew Moss H S which saw him narrowly defeated 14-15.

In the semi-finals the team was drawn against St James H S. Fortunately Tom Meakin and the rest of the team played their best badminton, securing victories in all three games very quickly by dominating their opponents. This led to a show down in the final against Hollingworth H S. Tom Meakin led from the start in his match and won to remain undefeated for the entire tournament whilst Paritosh was narrowly beaten by a very strong second seed from Hollingworth. This meant that the final came down to the doubles match, with Joe Urwin partnering Nick Haworth. Both players started the match well, giving themselves an early lead which they were able to hold all the way to victory.

The boys have now qualified to the next stage which will be held in Leigh Sports Village, Leigh Stadium on the 1 st March. Well done to all the boys;

Tom Meakin
Paritosh
Joe Urwin
Nick Haworth
Will Brown

Special mention should be given to Tom who led the team well and won all his games that ensured the team was in the very best position to win the tournament.
