London Olympics 2012 - The story so far...

…AGSB is strongly committed to supporting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London 2012. We believe that the games provide a once in a lifetime opportunity to engage and challenge young people and through this raise achievement across the curriculum.

As part of our aim to engage students in the 2012 games and the Olympic values, last summer we entered the 'GET SET' blogging competition and wrote blogs explaining how AGSB is living the Olympic and Paralympic values and how we plan to live the values in the future.

Our school won the competition and the opportunity for Oliver Carroll (11MN) and Josh Nicholls (8HN) to tour the Olympic Park in London on Tuesday 13th October, hosted by Jonathon Edwards, the Olympic Triple Jump Gold medallist. We saw the construction of some of the iconic facilities which will play host to the world’s greatest athletes in 2012. The tour also highlighted the many ways in which the North West is getting involved with London 2012. Manchester born Olympic Gold and Silver medalist Darren Campbell was on hand to tell his story of the living the Olympic dream while Shauna Thompson (100m Commonwealth Youth games record holder and Sale Harrier) shared her ambitions for competing at London 2012. We were given a sneak preview of the Olympic Stadium and the highlight was being driven around where the running track will eventually be laid. The visit was also featured on BBC North West News.

You will remember also that our Sports Day last summer had an Olympic theme to celebrate and reinforce the Olympic Values: FRIENDSHIP, COURAGE, DETERMINATION, EXCELLENCE, QUALITY, INSPIRATION AND RESPECT.

On Friday 20th November, AGSB hosted at The Grammar an SSAT Student Leadership Event to celebrate and prepare for London 2012. We received 110 students and staff from 11 schools from across Trafford and the North West. At the heart of the event was the aspiration to develop the leadership skills of young people by encouraging them to lead on London 2012 Games activities in their schools. Jamie Fisher (9PR), James Smith (9RN), Charlie Davies (9SD), Matthew Hardern (9RN), David Lynch (9MK), Ben Jackson (9RN), Jack Welch (9SD) and Will Lumb (9RN) represented our school and worked with students from other schools to develop proposals for future activities which will be incorporated across the curriculum running up to the Olympics and beyond. Mike Shaw (13WG), Dominic Bates (13HY), Phil Marchant (13MG) and Oliver Carroll (11MN) were student facilitators for the day and did a great job. The highlight of the day was an inspiring presentation by Debbie Flood, Olympic Rower and Silver medallist in Athens and Beijing.

We hope that you will all get involved and enjoy the London 2012 activities which the boys are planning.
